I woke the following extract froy a letter which we have "ecently received fra: a member of this Child serving out in the B regarding the matter of Pilotage in the ports mentioned:-

"Are you aware that an important port like Hong Kong has no ayster of Pilotare ? There is only one turopean who earns a precarious liyang, and not enough work for another one. The meat of the co called Pilots are Chinese who change the bidiculous sum of five dollars, but all they do is to show the Captain where to go. khese men have" references" which are,at the best, doubtful. an important Naval "ort like that ought to have Government Pilots on a fixed salary and pension, Japanese mi other ships come in and go out as they please. This moult not be allowed in Japan.

Surely

Suppose we had trouble with Japan, which is not at all unlikely, they would get to know wewthing for the

Chinese.

They have been know to say that they could take Hong Kong any time they liked,which is quite likely. A short time ago I wrote to Commander Bockrith, the Harbouinster,asking him if a British Pilot was required, and if so,"ould he consider y application. I received a reply that there was no intention employing any British Pilot at present. Skene voul1 be no Iack:
